YACHTING AUSTRALIA SMALL BOAT SAILING COURSE
LEVEL 1, Basic Skills 1
Designed to introduce the beginner to sailing through theory and practical sessions at the end of which an individual should be able to experience sailing on small boats under coach guidance. Syllabus includes safety awareness & equipment, wind awareness, some knots, basic heave to, primary boat controls, reaching, capsize recovery drill, towing, leaving and returning to the beach, some basic rules and some basic terminology.
Eligibility: Beginners - minimum age 10

LEVEL 2 - Basic Skills 2
This consolidates basic skills 1 and should enable the successful candidate the freedom to sail a small boat in sheltered conditions without coach guidance. Syllabus includes rigging, more knots, more right of way rules, sailing to windward, crew recovery drill and wind and tide awareness.

LEVEL 3 – Better Sailing
To equip a sailor with enhanced skills & awareness of the surrounding environment. The successful sailor will be able to manoeuvre more efficiently on all points of sailing in stronger winds.
This course takes sailors beyond the elementary stage to more advanced boat handling, sail and boat trim and general seamanship including roll tacking & gybing. It is designed to help participants become competent day sailors introducing spinnaker work and anchoring. Participants will also learn basic pilotage and how to make decisions taking them into sailing larger yachts. The course also forms the basis for the development of assistant instructors, essential to the continuation of quality sail training in the Northern Territory.
It is also a prerequisite for Youthsail.
Eligibility: At least one season's sailing.

LEVEL 4/5 – Racing Skills
The aim of these courses are to introduce sailors to competitive sailing, refine boat handling skills including speed control and introduce racing tactics and strategies. Sessions will be conducted throughout the season and competencies signed off in log books as they are achieved, making it possible to attend individual sessions. Topics will include fitness, tuning, starting, mark rounding, racing rules of sailing, wind shifts, sailing with a compass, planning for a championship. Attainment of level 1 or 2 will depend on previous experience. During this course participants are encouraged to join in the Club's racing program.
Eligibility:Basic skills 3 or equivalent.

SAILING CLASSES
These classes teach the same practical skills as Basic Skills 1 but are aimed at the 8 to 18 age group. The accent is to encourage juniors to enjoy sailing. When students have acquired Basic Skills 2 they can be encouraged to participate in junior club racing at weekends. Tuesdays will be used as a development squad for juniors with at least one season's sailing experience and Thursdays will be for less experienced and beginners.
Eligibility: Any person between 8 - 18 years.
Cost: $20.00 per session, vouchers available from DSC office.
$12.00 per session with own boat

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM
A week/or part thereof of sailing activities for the experienced and inexperienced younger sailors. The opportunity to sail and learn on a daily basis greatly increases the child’s perception and learning.
Eligibility: Any interested Junior age 10 or over
Cost: $350 per person/per week (lunches provided) $75 per day
Juniors who hold a Basic Skills 2 certificate will receive a 20% discount
Juniors who hold Level 3 can help as assistant instructors.

YOUTHSAIL 2010
Yachting Northern Territory will be conducting YouthSail under a top national coach. Youthsail provides an opportunity for competent or expert youth racing sailors to receive high level coaching, both on and off the water. It is also the entry level for the new Australian Squad Program.
Eligibility: Must hold Level 3 Better Sailing Certificate.
Cost: TBA.

JUNIOR TRAINING PROGRAM 2011
WET SEASON LEARN TO SAIL
This program involves young sailors learning to sail and race Minnows or Toppers. The Wet Season session is conducted over six sessions sailed on Cullen Bay Marina, Kahlin Beach.

Session times: 0900 – 10.30; 10.45 – 12.15; 1.30 – 3.00

YACHTING AUSTRALIA YACHT CRUISING SCHEME
INSHORE SKIPPER/COMPETENT CREW
(Conducted by Winter School of Sailing)
Skippers and crew members of keel boats and large multihulls, or persons interested in achieving these positions, should use this course to either introduce themselves to sailing larger yachts, or to consolidate existing skills. It should be noted that the course includes a substantial navigation component.
Eligibility: Basic Skills 2 or equivalent as a minimum.
Navigation module, Seamanship module and Practical module can be done separately

COMPETENT CREW PRACTICALS
For those who wish to learn how to become useful crew members on trailer sailers or keelboats. This is an opportunity to learn basic helming, safety, ropework, sail handling & trimming, crew overboard procedures.
Suitable for “sailing partners” & those who do not want to get wet capsizing in the Small Boat Sailing Scheme.
Competencies will be signed off in the log books as they are achieved.
Prerequisites:- Nil (but basic skills 2 recommended)

INTER SECONDARY SCHOOLS SAILING
Sessions for high school students who have attended sailing as part of their curriculum will be conducted after school and at weekends as appropriate.
The 2010 Inter-High Schools Regatta will be held on a dates agreed between Yachting Northern Territory, The Darwin Sailing Club and interested schools. The regatta will be conducted on a team racing basis with three two person crews representing each school. The winning team will be given the opportunity to represent the Northern Territory in the National Secondary Schools Team Racing Regatta.
TOPPER/X3/LASER/ PACER/ANYTHING CHALLENGE SERIES & INTRODUCTION TO RACING SKILLS
This is a great avenue for successful Basic Skills students to continue and consolidate sailing skills.
New participants will be informed of basic club racing procedures.
More experienced sailors can use the forum as a training and/or pleasant twilight sailing opportunity .

NATIONAL POWER BOAT HANDLING CERTIFICATE
(vessels up to 8 metres in length)
This course is to provide participants with the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge to safely operate a small power boat and is essential for those contemplating serious on the water training, coaching, judging and race management.
Course content includes:- safety principals, rules and regulations, charts, buoyage, care and maintenance, distress and emergencies and practical boat handling.

MARINE RADIO OPERATORS CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY
This course is considered essential for any skippers or crew who sail on radio equipped vessels. It is also desirable for persons manning the Club’s rescue craft.
