Sailing Report
4th March 2010
The Class Story
The 2009/10 A Class National Championships were held from Monday 28th December through till Saturday 2nd of January at Safety Beach Sailing Club on the Mornington Peninsula.
The Darwin Sailing Club had four representatives drive the 4000 kilometres to compete, Christopher Batenburg, Michelle Jones, Jack Benson and David Beeby. All four arrived a week early to prepare for the windy, cold conditions, competing in some local club racing the weekend before Christmas!
The Nationals w as a tough competition, with the normal A Class crew turning up, with the likes of Glenn Ashby and Steve Brewin! However, we also found out the BMW Oracle boys decided they needed some practise on a smaller cat! Conditions changed throughout the week, with a mixture of heavy and light winds, but it was always cold!
Overall results were; 1st Steve Brewin NSW, 2nd Brad Collet Qld and 3rd Graham Parker Victoria. The NT did well, results were; Jack Benson 10th, Christopher Batenburg 14th, David Beeby 35th and Michelle Jones 47th. It was also great to catch up with ex-Darwin Sailor Konrad Shultz who finished 51st. Well done to Jack Benson who also won First Junior and Michelle Jones who won First Lady.

Part 2
The Minnows Success at Lake Cootharaba hosted Minnow Nationals
In the Open Division, which was also split into Senior (over 12) & Junior (11 & under) our sailors were also competitive, which does place us in good stead for us hosting the Nationals in Jul 10.
Hamish Wiltshire in Sonic was 4th in the Open & 2nd in the Senior Division. Because of the quality & closeness of the Regatta photographer we can now prove to him that he does sit too far back
going upwind, & needs to hike further! John Lynch on Greased Lightning was our next highest placed sailor, with 10th in the Open & the 3rd Junior. The 1st & 2nd Juniors were 2nd & 3rd in the Open so John sailed very well. Brittany Weir in Tangles was 12th in the Open & sailed strongly. Lewis Radonich came 16th, and had some bad luck with his boat Maxi who will be heading into the repair shop, in addition to having had a number of running repairs throughout the championships. Lewis did very well when holed to make it safely back to shore. Luke Telford in Maximus was 23rd in the Open & sailed very bravely & improved throughout the Regatta. It was a big step up from the Tadpoles, but as he already had one Nationals under his belt & would have whipped the Novices, he stepped up to the challenge of the big fleet & grew with the experience - well done!
Our boats are safely back, and many of the Frogs are assistant instructors on the Wet Season Learn to Sail Course which commenced on 20 Feb 10. Then for the Minnow sailors, families & supporters it is full steam ahead for the planning of the 29th Minnow Nationals to be held at Darwin Sailing Club 4-9 Jul 10. We look forward to strong club support, reciprocating the hospitality of the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club and showing the Queensland, Western Australian and Victorian Minnows sailing in the dry and light winds.

House Update to Members:
You will be aware, if you have been at the club lately that the bar renovations have started to gain momentum. Last weekend a large part of the demolition of the old bar took place. Thank you to members Lindsay Lane, and Dan Bascheria. A big thank you to the bar staff who volunteered to come in, in there time and assist. Bindi Johnson, Adrian Munroe we would also like to thank Steve Beard and Ethan Neaves. Everyone's assistance is much appreciated.
To Rear Commodore House was it an accident or were you testing the first aid response of DSC staff? Can we suggest you watch were you put your hand in future. The DSC staff cope very well with first aid emergencies and so do the medical staff at RDH neither party required at their particular speciality..
The rock wall upgrade has commenced and Ostojic is moving towards DSC, we will soon have movement at the front of the club.
