News from the Bar:
BAR WORK HAS STARTED!!!!!!!!! We are currently unable to provide tap beer or postmix soft drinks. Some products may be unavailable due to storage limitations. Please ask at the bar if you can’t see your favourite drink. Thank you for your patience. Bindi and staff.
A temporary bar is being established in the members lounge. It is hoped the renovations will be as quick as possible with completion planned for the end of March.
It is very exciting, the renovations are VERY close to starting, there has been an enormous amount of work going on behind the scenes to make the changes as smooth and possible. A big thank you to the bar staff for their very hard work and patience. For the rest of us we can only wait and give them plenty of support, embrace the change, remember the old bar and the temporary bar for tales of the future.

Introducing Our New Sailing Manager—David Omnes
Dear members,
The time has come to introduce myself, something I’m not used to doing.
Anyway … here it goes…
My name is David Omnes, and I am the DSC Sailing Manager.
I come from Brest in Brittany, in the West of France, a beautiful country for sailing, a bit windy, a bit of swell, not much sun and fine cool drizzle…
As a kid, there was no other choice but to like the rain and obviously, as a sailor there, your favourite outfit is the 5mm wetsuit all year round.
I’ve always sailed within a club, mainly in Brittany.
I’ve sailed on a variety of boats – from Optimist to 45ft catamarans, and windsurf. I raced on Optimists, Hobie 16 and F18 as well as the Tour de France Voile and offshore races.
I became a dinghy and catamaran instructor in 1995, then a coastal cruising instructor in 2003, started a cruising school with a friend, and taught till 2008.
Aside from sailing I worked as an engineer on sonar systems before enrolling in the French Navy in order to spend more time at sea.
I then spent 3 years as officer of the watch along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts and sailed around the Indian Ocean twice, driving ships from 130ft to 600ft, before my wife convinced me to settle in Darwin.
But what about Darwin vs Brest?
Stingersuit vs Wetsuit, 8m tidal range vs 7m, cyclone season vs Atlantic lows, 32°C vs 32°F, unsurveyed areas vs rocks everywhere, Coopers vs Bordeaux, sun everyday vs rain everyday, new interesting wildlife, new culture (and language as well)…
I started as a volunteer at the Sailing Club as soon as I arrived in Darwin.
Working as Sailing Manager now is for me a way to give back some of what I received and learnt. And of course learn again and again.
See you soon at the Club or on the water!
Fair winds, David
Members introduce yourselves if you see David around the Club and make him welcome, feel free to assist him in refining his Aussie accent

Proposed Helipad at Vestey’s Beach
Please give consideration to lodging a submission against this proposal? Submissions are to be lodged to Dept of Lands & Planning by 11 February 2010.
It would be in the Club’s interest and that of residents in the area to lodge an objection due to the following points there are others and people are encouraged to include more in their submissions; safety of small sailing yachts who use the area of water adjacent to the proposed helipad, for which there will be safety concerns due to the ‘down draft’ created by the helicopter during landing and take off; concerns for the impact on the environment in the area there is prolific bird life in the waterways in the area and some are endangered and ongoing noise would impact on their habitat and nesting; bird strikes would create a safety issue for the aircraft and subsequent public in the area; disturbing noise factors for residents and the adjacent schools in the area.
The suggestion from Sunday’s community meeting as raised by John Plummer also a DSC member, is that the airport is barely 2 mins away by air and the helipad should be accommodated there where there is appropriate facilities and no concerns for safety or concerns for flora and fauna in the environment of Vestey’s beach.
Please feel free to pass this around to interested members and residents of the area.
Kind regards

VALE 'Cocky'
Members were saddened by the news of the passing of long time club member Corneius 'Cocky' Goedhardt, the creator and proprietor of The Yacht Shop.
chandlery at the club.
The chandlery started life as Fourcroy marine owned by Rick Edmunds and Hans Vos, in the modest surroundings of the junior clubhouse at the rear at what was known as the Ambon Office and is now the meeting room. They in turn sold it to Steve Smith during the late 1970's. Cocky purchased the business in the mid eighties renaming it The Yacht Shop NT and carried out boat repairs with shipmate 'Baldy Pete' Bonython as well as the retail aspects of the business. It was some 10 years later that his plans to expand took shape and the main structure was erected and extended around 2005. From his upper walkway he spent many a Darwin sunset enjoying arguably the best views of the moored fleet on Fannie Bay with the odd refreshment.
It was no mean feat to realise this dream as those closest to him would attest. A tireless worker with a strict work ethic, to the uninitiated, he was uncompromising in his approach to his business and developed a business range and acquisition equal to or better than any marine discount house in Australia (or to my mind, anywhere else). The proferring of helpful advice was another matter.
A strong supporter of sailing, Cocky took particular interest in the offshore events, especially the demanding Round the Islands Race offshore classic and was its major sponsor. He monitored the position of the competitors during the event and motored out in his dinghy to present the line honours winner with a bottle of 'Bundy' regardless of the time of day. He gave special thought to the prize giving which he held on the Thursday evening following the race and was once seen to hand all three prizes to the winning boat in division 1as all others had retired due to the severity of the conditions.
Hi did not suffer fools and his knowledge of yachts and all things marine was enviable. His responses to what he regarded as inane queries on boating matters are now the subject of folklore around the club and will probably find their way into subsequent club writings.
Sadly, ill health dogged his last years with us but this did little to dim his fighting spirit or enthusiasm for his calling. His passing in this day and age will inevitably mean the loss forever of so much technical knowledge of our sport and pastime. No more the grey haired gentleman enjoying his favourite tipple at the pedestal table outside the sailors bar.
Gone but never forgotten - a proposal mooted by some members to name the Darwin Sailing Club principle start boat in his honour was greeted with universal endorsement.
Barry Stach - Commodore
